Munich has a long standing coffee culture – a guide to cafés in the city was actually published all the way back around 1835! That being said, I don’t know that I’d call it a coffee city like Seattle, Vienna, or Havana, but it’s definitely growing. Munich is slowly gaining more and more coffee roasters, with over 20 currently scattered throughout the city. Maybe I wasn’t going to the right places, but as much as I hate to say it I honestly wasn’t overly impressed by coffee in Germany as a whole. Not that I didn’t try – I also visited multiple coffee shops in both Frankfurt and Stuttgart!
A reminder as always: I don’t give out actual ratings like stars or numbers to the coffee shops that I visit. I don’t usually find those kind of reviews helpful personally because they’re just so subjective. Everyone’s tastes are different, so I could hate a place that someone else loves (or vice versa). Instead I provide details about what to expect, what I ordered during my visit, recommendations/tips for your visit, and my overall thoughts to help you can decide if you want to try it out yourself. sweet spot kaffee – Viktualienmarkt

Located on a little side street by the Viktualienmarkt farmers market is the sweet spot kaffee. I’m glad we had plans that morning and already intended to grab coffee to-go, because this place was packed. Thanks to my short girl arms, most pictures I would’ve tried to take inside would’ve mostly been the top or back of people’s heads! A plus for us was that the menu was entirely in English, so it is definitely a very tourist-friendly option. It is on the smaller side, with only enough room for a handful of people to sit down. But I’ve heard that their second location in the Gärtnerplatz is slightly larger (seats for 8) if you prefer to sit.
They didn’t have a ton of food options, just a small selection of baked goods, and no hot chocolate or apfelschorle so unfortunately nothing for Jasper to drink either. What we ordered: an oat milk cappuccino for me and a walnut banana bread for Jasper. The cappuccino was very straightforward and average, nothing overly memorable but still a decent cup of coffee. Like the trend we’d noticed during the rest of our time in Germany, there was only one size option – small. I don’t think I’d make a special trip over here if I was in Munich again, but if I was in the area and needed a caffeine boost I wouldn’t pass it by.

Vits der Kaffee

We had a little free time one morning of our trip, so we decided it was the perfect day for a sit-down breakfast at Vits der Kaffee. It’s super easy to get to as it’s located just down the street from the Isator train station. It kind of reminded me of a cross between a retro diner and a rustic café. When we walked in we were told it was cash only, but I’ve seen other people online mention paying with card. So I’m not sure if it was because we were obviously tourists or the card system was just down.
I was thrilled to see the Cappuccino Grande “mit doppeltem espresso” (with double espresso) on the menu, which gave me the amount of espresso I’m used to in a normal cappuccino back home. Could I have ordered it that way at the other coffee shops I’d been to on this trip? Probably. But my overwhelmed/overstimulated brain doesn’t always work properly in foreign countries. Regardless, the coffee tasted great. Jasper was pleasantly surprised to also get milk art on his oat milk hot chocolate.
I originally wanted to get the pretzel croissant, but apparently they’re pretty popular because we got there within an hour of opening and they were already sold out! So instead I opted for a bagel with goat cream cheese, tomato, lettuce, and apricot jam. Jasper went with a classic – scrambled eggs and bacon. I definitely would stop in again, maybe even in the afternoon for lunch and a beer!

Kanso Coffee Lab
This small modern Japanese-inspired coffee shop in downtown Munich was actually a spur of the moment stop. Kanso is a bit tricky to find, as it’s tucked away in a courtyard behind a bunch of shops. They had a line almost out the door, and almost all the seating (both inside and out) was full, so I was a bit overwhelmed. If I’d done all my usual pre-trip research, I likely wouldn’t have gotten a coffee to go because they serve their different coffee ‘experiences’ with colorful cups on sleek wooden boards. All the photos of them I see on Instagram are beautiful! I’m assuming the aesthetics are a big reason behind their high Google rating, because honestly I wasn’t all that impressed by my oat milk cappuccino. I do plan to go back and give them another chance in the future.

For Next Time
There’s unfortunately only so much caffeine I can handle (and it’s nowhere near as much as I’d like), which means I usually can’t visit every coffee shop I want to during my travels. Below are some coffee shops that are on my list for the next time I’m in Munich!
roca junior – Kreittmayrstraße 5, 80335 München.
A small artisan coffee shop located in the Maxvorstadt, known for their espresso tonic.
Man Versus Machine – Müllerstraße 23, 80469 München.
An independent specialty coffee roaster popular with people who like modern and fruity flavors.
Pacandé – Implerstraße 65, 81371 München.
This small coffee roaster in Sendling is often rated as one of the best in the city.
