A Guide to Bucks County Wineries

Generally when people think of wine regions in the United States, the first that come to mind (at least for me) are Napa Valley in California and the Finger Lakes in New York. But did you know there are hundreds of wineries in Pennsylvania? I’ll be the first to admit, I didn’t know much about Pennsylvania wineries until a couple years ago. That was when I went on my first PA wine tour in Lancaster County, and I’ve since gone down the rabbit hole.

After some research, I found there are a surprising number of counties in Pennsylvania with wine trails – including Bucks, Montgomery, Lake Erie, and even Berks! Because of its proximity to Philly, I decided that Bucks County would be my next foray into Pennsylvania wineries. But before I could put my own plans into action, I was surprised with a birthday wine tour spanning both Bucks and Montgomery counties. Most (but not all) of the wineries listed below are part of the official Bucks County Wine Trail.

Highlighted Wineries

Obviously compared to wineries in the Finger Lakes, I’m a Bucks County wine newbie. So keeping that in mind, these are my favorite Bucks County wineries thus far!

2730 Hilltown Pike, Perkasie, PA

I was a little overwhelmed by the number of wines on the menu at Bishop Estate. Their options include Dry/Off-Dry Whites, Dry/Off-Dry Reds, Sweet Whites/Reds, and Fruit. We went on a Saturday morning within about 30 minutes of them opening, and ended up being the only ones in the tasting room. It basically felt like a private tasting! So I highly recommend making this your first stop of the day. For $10 we got to try six wines of our choice, and got to take home a branded wine glass. There were still SEVENTEEN I wasn’t able to sample, so I’ll definitely be going back! Friday through Sunday they even have food trucks and live music.

Unlike the rest of the wineries I mention in this post, Vivat Alfa isn’t listed as part of the Bucks County Wine Trail. The inside of the building isn’t much to look at, with lots of boxes of wine strewn everywhere, but the grounds are pretty and I was pleasantly surprised by the wines. The wine list here was much more manageable than at Bishop Estate, and with the tasting you get to try all 10! We were able to see some of the vines up close on our way out, and it was the first time I’d ever seen them with grapes still growing. I never realized how massive wine grapes were!
