Short Girl Travel: the Pros and Cons

Whether its a long travel day, a missed layover in a foreign country, or something unexpected like flooded roadways blocking the normal way to the airport (thanks climate change!), getting to where you’re going can be rough. Regardless of your size, age, or level of experience, I think the stress associated with traveling is pretty universal.

Being a short girl has its perks and drawbacks on a normal day, but since I started traveling more regularly I’ve discovered some more pros/cons I never really thought about before. Sitting down for dinner? I have to pick a chair, not a booth, so I can adjust to reach the table. Space on the train a bit tight? No problem, I can squeeze myself in somewhere.

I will say that all things considered, I’m pretty lucky. Most of my short girl travel cons are really just slight inconveniences!

Pros and Cons of Short Girl Travel

Short Travel Pro: Extra legroom for short girls

Pro

I never have to worry about leg room on planes and trains.

Con

It’s hard to get comfortable while sitting down when your legs dangle and don’t touch foot rests.

Pro

Being short makes people think I’m younger than I am, so I’m offered help quite often!

Con

Putting my bags into overhead compartments on planes and trains can be a struggle.

Con: Tall Overhead Train Baggage Compartments
Crowds at the Acropolis

Pro

I can easily weave through crowds to quickly get to where I’m going.

Con

It’s a common occurrence for me to get separated in a crowd, since I’m easy to lose sight of.

Pro

My clothes tend to take up less space, which means lighter bags and more room for souvenirs.

Con

I don’t take up a lot of space, so people like to invade my personal space thinking I must not need much elbow room.
